“As a WatchGuard Partner of the Year for four consecutive years, we understand the latest security issues and solutions in the marketplace,” notes Jennifer Mazzanti, president, eMazzanti Technologies. “Today firewalls aren’t enough as they were designed for 1990 level threats. Being aware of the latest threats and solutions is critical for businesses to avoid disaster.”
Firewalls Aren’t Enough
Firewalls will not protect businesses from all threats. If employees use email, visit Web sites and receive instant messages or download files, there’s any inherent risk. Any of these can carry malicious content into a computer. The firewall happily lets it through because the user asked for it, i.e., he sent the request for the content and it turned out to be malicious.
Firewalls do not block malicious content. They only block connections. Common sense — augmented by anti-malware and anti-virus software and hardware will help. Further, firewalls can stop hackers and some of the most virulent worms.
Unified Threat Management
According to WatchGuard, only a robust, Unified Threat Management (UTM) solution can protect a business from bugs, threats and cybercriminals. UTM defines, enacts and audits a company’s network around the clock. It includes protection against viruses (still make up 57% of the attacks), spam control (92% of the spam has URL embedded, a launch pad for threats), URL Filtering (over 730 million URL attacks in 2012), Intrusion Prevention, and Application Control (music, social media, search queries, email alerts, videos, etc.). In addition, printers and mobile devices open a network to a whole other world of threats.
“There are more applications and applets available today than ever before,” says Mazzanti. “How does a business know what the apps are actually doing and how vulnerable it might be by installing them?”
